Circumventing DRM is not illegal?

So says Download Squad among other blogs.  The Fifth Circuit appeals court in New Orleans said that simply circumventing DRM without any nefarious purpose is NOT illegal.  This is great news.  While the actual court case involved GE circumventing DRM on a dongle to repair something or another, one could easily see this extending to DRM on movies, music, or software.  We’ll have to wait for other cases and higher courts to be consistent with this ruling, but this is a great move forward.

UPDATE: Boing Boing also reports that it is legal to jailbreak your cell phone.  Big victory for people that like doing things with stuff they own.
